A delightful day of cricket unfolded at Leigh CC on Sunday, June 1st, 2025, where the sun shone almost as brightly as the performances on the pitch! We'd like to extend a thank you to Leigh CC for their hospitality – it was, as always, a pleasure to visit your beautiful ground and very welcome to see familiar faces and back to healthy availability.

The Mogador Wanderers, winning the toss and opting to field first, set the stage for a competitive friendly. Leigh CC put up a formidable total of 230 all out in 39.2 overs, with some fantastic batting displays. Including one very short boundary putting anyone in the playground next door at serious risk. Binesh Dinesh (great name!) the standout performance of the day and probably the difference between the two sides mixing up attack and defence in the middle of the innings.

In reply, the Wanderers showed great spirit, reaching 197 all out in 37.1 overs. While Leigh CC ultimately won, there were certainly some standout performances from the Mogador Wanderers that deserve a hearty cheer!

Our very own Jimmy Honeyfield was in superb form with the bat, battering a magnificent 51 runs, including some huge straight sixes into the field over the road – a truly excellent knock that kept the game alive when wickets fell around him! On the bowling front, Tom Leaning a standout performance in front of his family, seeing cricket for the first time picking up a brilliant 2 wickets for just 21 runs in his 4 overs at the death and contributing with some late runs (22 leaving him plus 1 for the day) to give a glimmer of hope we could get close to the target. Other notable contributions with the ball for the Wanderers included Brennan Calafato (including a magnificent clean bowled which only he did not see due to rolling on the ground and facing the other way as the ball was released) and Steven Pullen, opening the bowling and both taking 2 wickets each. Brennan also took a stunning catch diving forward at midwicket. A performance worthy of the new “flag bearer” for 2025. Ash Bukhari and Peter Furner also put in a solid effort setting the tone with the bat with 27 and 23 respectively.

Well played MWCC and unfortunately “the streak” of winning comes to an end but no disgrace in losing to a very tight and disciplined bowling attack. We go to Oxted and Follies next with healthy availability.
