Mogs go one down in 2005 Ashes series after stunning captain's innings at Headley (a personal account from Captain Alexander Mills Montgomerie Hewitt)

"It is with a heavy heart that I report a rare defeat against our oldest and closest opponents Headley CC. Unbeaten in many a glorious summer's day on the top of Headley Heath, a strong Mogs side arrived on a cool Summer's day and did what any travelling cricket side would do to prepare for such a fixture - get the bar open! Having won the toss, Headley inserted the Mogs on a slow but true track. Furner flew out of the traps like Ballyregan Bob and outscored newlywed 'Action' Jackson with a sumptuous smorgasbord of cuts, pulls & drives. Just as his team-mates started whispering the very real possibility of a first ever Mog century from the little master, Furns was sadly caught behind a mere 20 or so short of this wallet-emptying milestone, adjudged caught behind by Umpire Davis.

The hurried removal of the ice-cream van over the road at extra-cover/point signalled Tharpy's entry at no 3 and showed everyone what a belter of a track it was in a coruscating 50 ball 82, including a number of ball-losing hooks into the woods before selflessly perishing in sight of another Mog ton. With strong rumours of serial jug evasion sweeping the ground, Jackson also perished with three figures in his scope as the Mogs declared at a sprightly 242-4 in 40 overs leaving us 45 overs to take 10 Headley wickets.

Unfortunately Headley only required 30 overs to get the runs as Headley Captain and opening batsman Phil Chapman scored a quite magnificent 176* with none of the Mogs bowlers spared in an innings of untamed savagery. In a whirlwind of strokeplay, Chapman hit 11 x 6's all around the ground, including 3 that hit the pavilion roof, 4 that went over the main road and 1 that shattered the rear windscreen of his father's estate car in the penultimate over.

Headley legends of years gone past were all at the pavilion to celebrate an overdue win that was wholly deserved, though we could not help but wonder what might have happened had Briggsy held on to a sharp caught & bowled that would have removed Chapman from the run chase equation. On such things are Ashes series decided! Well done Headley - see you in September for a chance of revenge."
