The Mogs played our old friends The Cavaliers at Micklefield School as Reigate Priory Ladies were given the main Reigate Priory pitch. It had rained a fair amount leading up to the match so the strip was stodgy and greener than a seasick frog. Captain Cooper won the toss and elected to bowl first. Alfie Hewitt & Neil Coles opened the bowling and delivered a great opening spell between them with Coles striking first; our hosts found the boundary regularly enough to keep the scoreboard ticking over however. Leaning bowled a short spell and it was left to Alex Hewitt & Cooper to try & stem the flow of runs, with Fairclough and Willis completing our overs. Special mention to two run outs, one an absolute worldie by Alfie Hewitt with a direct hit from Long Off. The Cavaliers got 192-7 off their 40 overs.
We enjoyed a splendid tea – particularly good fresh sandwiches and strong builders tea – before our reply. After a slow start wickets started to fall with both Furner & Willis adjudged LBW by Umpire Hewitt. Furns is crowdfunding [Ed: going well!] to have him replaced at the top of the innings in future games. Micklewright scored a dazzling 34 but when Fairclough, Lee & Leaning fell in quick succession, we were always up against it. Hewitt & Coles put on 48 for the 9th wicket but when Neil was run out, Hewitt found his stumps rearranged an over later and the game was up.
All in all it was a lovely afternoon in mostly good Spring weather with our hosts as congenial as ever.
