Format: 35 overs.
A Mogs team with a fine blend of youth and experience were bowling first against a Blackheath side that have had the better of us in recent times, the Mogs were desperate to put that right. Ollie Friend and Harry Hewitt opened the bowling and whilst they were unrewarded with wickets, there was some scoreboard pressure starting to mount on the Blackheath top order. However a fine piece of fielding and five great overs from Tom Leaning removed three of the Blackheath batsmen, supported by Brennan Calafato continued the Mogs excellent bowling and fielding performance. Will Cooper, Ben Freeland and Alex Hewitt bowled four overs each, with the club chairman picking up a wicket and helping keep the opposition to 158-7 after they’d used their 35 overs. A special mention must go to William Parker who kept wicket brilliantly, putting into practice some of the dramatic dives he must have seen his club’s goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale pulling off on sky sports.
After a lovely tea, Peter Furner and Steven Pullen led the Mogs out to bat, and started strongly against some excellent Blackheath bowling. The Mogs were ticking along nicely, with Steven Pullen, Adam Micklewright and Alex Hewitt all getting into the 20s before being dismissed. After a couple of crucial wickets lost, the Mogs dropped below the run rate and struggled to get back into the game from there, the tail gave their best but were outdone by Blackheath and left us bowled out 26 runs short of the opposition. Many thanks to the opposition for their kind hospitality and their company, it was Sunday cricket at its best, a competitive match played in the right spirit followed by a pint in Blackheath’s lovely pavilion afterwards.
