The Mogador Wanderers secured a good victory at Holloway Hill Recreation Ground on a glorious Summer's afternoon. The pitch looked & behaved like the M25 - rock hard on the surface but actually very slow and Hewitt won the toss and elected to bat in a 40 overs game. Furns & Ash put on 108 for the first wicket with Ash driving in the outside lane, dishing out his usual collective of cuts, drives & pulls as he thrilled the small crowd with another masterclass. Furns however rarely veered from the inside land with a Panini collection of forward defenses, leaves and late cuts. Furner fell after 23 overs via an inside edge and Riddy strode to the crease, determined to up the boundary count. Immediately the scoreboard started spinning round a bit quicker as Pete unleashed a series of scorching cover drives and when Ash departed for a superb 83, Hewitt kept the momentum going as the Mogs sailed past the 200 mark. As the bowling slowed down, Riddy, Hirst, Brew & Cooper all kept Hewitt on strike as the skipper reached a speedy half century, but they lost their own wickets in the process and after 40 overs, the Mogs had scored an above par 262 for 5.
Tea scored 7/10 with excellent sandwiches (coronation chicken and cheese & ham), with a Scandinavian plate of cheese, cucumber & tomatoes the only deviation from the usual Sunday fayre.
Replete we took back to the field with Brooker steaming up the hill and Hirst coming down from the pavilion end, involving jumping over the drain in the process. Both bowled well with Brooker snaring 2 wickets including an extraordinary catch by Cooper at second slip that had the fielders purring with pleasure. Godalmings' no's 3 & 4 were both excellent and soon they were putting our openers & change bowlers, Cooper & Friend, to the sword with a series of beautiful cover & straight drives. Both batsmen timed the ball better than anyone else all match. Ash was not content with 83 runs and produced a 4 over spell that snared 4 wickets, 2 with leg breaks and 2 with googlies, one of which accounted for no 3 Olly Barber for a beautiful 56. With the stuffing knocked out of Godalming's middle order. Harry Hewitt bowled a great but wicketless 5 over spell up the hill whilst Ali Brew snaffled a scalp with Harry taking the second of his 2 catches. Despite a 10th wicket stand of 45 Brooker came back on and removed Rocky's middle stump and the Mogs retired to the pavilion for cold refreshments and some Olympics on BBC. Marvellous.
