The Mogs won their first game of the season on a beautiful Summers afternoon. Mog regulars Hewitt, Honeyfield, Lee, Cooper, Burton & Lewis were joined by Oxshott's Saker & Wood and Chertsey's Graham with young Harry Hewitt (11 yrs old) making his full debut for the Club.
We were asked to bat first on a slow green wicket that made shot making quite hard work. Cooper & Lee put on 41 for the first wicket before Lee holed out trying to up the tempo. JD strode in manfully at No 3 having negotoated to play cricket instead of attending his son Oli's birthday party and this heroic sacrifice did not warrant the golden duck he received in return. Wood holed out and at 57-3 after 14 overs Tadworth were in the game. Cooper was playing nicely however & Hewitt found the lack of pace to his liking and these two put on just over 100 before Cooper (77) was bowled & Hewitt (69) was stumped. By this time our total was approaching 200 with umpire Moulton of the opinion that 140 was quite a good score on this pitch. Honeyfield marshalled the lower order and we saw out the full 40 overs with Patrick "Golden" Graham and Harry Hewitt collecting 10 off the last 2 overs, to much encouragement from the boundary.
A good tea, supplemented by a jug of lager & 6 bottles of Bulmers from Aussie guest Wood, saw the Mogs skip back out on to the pitch and we soon started making inroads into the opposition. Joseph took 4 wickets (4-22) in another good spell and "Golden" Graham also bowled well, hinting at a good potential Mog career in the offing. Harry replaced him from the sightscreen end and bowled a terrific 5 over spell, beating the bat regularly with Godfather James spilling a sharp chance at point that would have seen him take his first wicket for the Club. Wood took 3 quick wickets (3-6) and engineered one run out and JD ensured his match finished better than it started with the 10th wicket, seeing us complete our victory. Roll on Merstham...
