Cotswold Cricketing Celebrities v Mogador Wanderers
The celebrities were obviously too famous to play as our opposition managed to muster just 8 cricketers, but after a period of rum punch-enhanced negotiation, the Mogs lent Andy Tharp and Stu Jackson's mate Steve to make up the numbers. Our ground was the beautiful Buscot Park - surely one of the prettiest grounds most of us had played - and after winning the toss on a hot afternoon, the Mogs elected to bat. Again contributions were given by all of the Mogs with Hewitt (4 and Richards (73*) top scoring - the latter most poignantly as he was using his late father's (Mog legend Alan Richards) cricket bat for the last time. The Mogs declared at 198-6 with Parker & Goulstone giving late impetus to the total. Anticipating a speedy victory, The Mogs were bemused to discover that Stu's mate Steve played grade cricket in Australia and he was soon battering everyone to the boundary as he smashed 120 off 80 balls. The CCCCC put on 173 for the 1st wicket and with just 7 overs to go, they needed 26 to win with all wickets in tact. Lewis was brought back on however and immediately bowled Steve with one that actually turned and with Andy Tharp coming in at 3, the Mogs realised that we were already into their tail! Lewis continued to get wickets in a beautiful spell and the CCCCC's runs dried up altogether. With 1 over to go Lechlade were 183-6 (5 wickets for Lewis & 1 run out) and the Mogs required 3 wickets for an incredible win. The first 3 balls were wicket less but Hewitt bowled their president 4th ball and their wicket keeper 5th ball. Last ball and a wicket would complete an incredible win for the Mogs and a hat trick for Hewitt. Hewitt bowls and it pins their No 10 bang in front of middle stump. All 11 Mogs appeal, but the (home) umpire declines to give it and the match ends in a thrilling draw.
