Mogador Wanderers Cricket Tour

Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire & Surrey

25th - 28th July 2002

Some 18 tourists plus families/girlfriends made themselves available for our tour of the West Country and we were pleasantly accommodated at the New Inn Hotel, Lechlade, which offered cheap accommodation and a late bar. Perfect! Our local Mogador Wanderer and joint organiser, Jonathan Richards - aka The Butcher of S'Algar (or is that The Fishmonger of Lechlade?) - hosted a delicious fresh trout & Red Stripe barbeque to welcome the tourists on Thursday and we made our way to the pretty Lechlade ground in very high spirits on a beautiful day.

Lechlade v Mogador Wanderers CC
After winning the toss, the Mogs elected to bat first and the Mogs rattled along at a good pace with Milner (73) and Mackenzie (26) setting the pace and all the other Mogs contributing to a healthy 231-6 off 31 overs, including 1 leg bye off Tharpey's cranium. Mog hero Matt Lewis (sportingly playing for Lechlade) found out how hard it is bowling to a Mog as he was hit out of the ground by both Goulstone (who he later bowled) and Hewitt in a frenetic last 6 overs. After an excellent Lechlade tea, the Mogs launched their "offensive" and the "Wild Man of Mogador" - Jamie Freeland - soon ripped up two leg stumps in his opening 2 overs, before verbally abusing the Lechlade umpire ("I'm so misunderstood" he later backtracked), and being retired to the outfield. Lechlade's excellent Aussie overseas pro soon got his 50 though, before the Major was introduced and bowled him 3rd ball, with a slightly slower one that gripped, ripped and gently disturbed the off bail to much celebration. With their overseas pro "back in the hutch", the Mogs expected an easy win, but their young No 4 made an excellent 95*, whilst wickets fell at the other end. Captain Hewitt was the pick of our bowling with 4-31, bowling last man Lewis in the penultimate over with Lechlade just 16 short. Great game & a super start to the tour.
